TKAM (Chapters 1-4 Pgs 3-41) No more reading?

Published by rongfu4 at 8:30 pm under Rong Fu, initial post

I keep wondering why Miss Caroline would want Scout to stop reading. She tells her that she will take over and try to undo the damage. Is there something wrong with Scout that Miss Caroline needs to fix? Reading is not supposed to be a bad thing. Everyone knows that people read at different ages. Miss Caroline probably wants everyone at the same level in her class. I was even more surprised when Miss Caroline said that Scout’s father did not know how to teach. Teachers are not supposed to bring the students down, but educate them for the future. I believe Miss Caroline should be happy that a student’s father is involved with his daughter’s education.  Miss Caroline is saying the things that a bad teacher would normally say. If I was the teacher, I would be excited if someone in my class was ahead of my schedule. That just shows me how much that student wants to learn. The things Scout said were mean, but that doesn’t give the teacher the right to hit the student. Even if Miss Caroline did have the right, Scout didn’t really do anything wrong to deserve the punishment. I think Miss Caroline did feel a little bit bad about hitting Scout. That reminds us to think about our actions before taking them.

So true about teachers Rong. It makes me happy when parents are involved in their children’s education.

Remember the time period of the story. Hitting was a common happening in schools during that tine period. I am so glad it is not now :)
