Chap. 21-25 An Old Elementary Saying

“If you don’t have anything good to say, keep it to yourself” is an old saying for all elementary schools nation wide. Our teachers always tell us that it is better to keep opinions to yourself so no one will get offended. Also by practicing this principle, children learn how to be respectful to each other and to other grown ups. This picture illustrates that because this kid keeps his mouth shut because he does not want to offend anyone, like how Mr. Ewell offended Atticus Finch by spitting on him, beating him and threatening him. Why can’t people learn that respect is what we need to get our lives in shape? Mr. Ewell should have just kept his mouth shut and took his anger and frustration out of a pillow or on a piece of wood, not human beings.

Chap. 21-25 Enough is Enough

These chapters were outrageous compared to the passed chapters. It is enough that Mr. Tom Robinson is a hated man because he is black. It is enough that he was frames for “raping” Mayella Ewell. It is enough that, Bob Ewell was the one who is supposed to be sued, not Mr. Tom Robinson. It is enough that blacks were discriminated and convicted of crime, just because of their color. It is not fair, how Atticus Finch, prepared and laid out valid and well supported arguments during the trial. Why would the jury or the judge, have the verdict of placing Mr. Tom Robinson as a guilty criminal man? They have the heart as hard like a stone. Not only did they convict him guilty, they murdered him?! I believe that it is unreasonable to shoot someone seventeen times because they ran away. Everyone knows that Tom Robinson is an innocent man, and if he ran away at least shoot only once, but seventeen times?! It’s like a Tom Robinson was a dangerous criminal that had to be stopped with seventeen bullets and cause him his life. When I was reading this I just wanted to beat up the person that shot Mr. Tom Robinson. It is just unfair for him and his family. Bob Ewell and Mayella Ewell, should be held personally responsible for his death.

Chap. 17-20 Hiding the Shame

“She was white and she tempted a Negro…No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards.” (272)

Humility is an essential part of life. With out shame you have no respect for others, and most importantly for yourself. Mayella, has no respect for herself because of two reasons. She lusted for a man that was already married and two; she lied about getting raped by Mr. Tom Robinson. She wasn’t thinking clearly or she wasn’t thinking at all because she acted before she thought about the consequences. She just wanted her butt to be saved and proclaimed as innocent, so she won’t ruin her reputation. She is deliberately willing to take down and ruin another person’s life with the mistake that she started.

Chap. 17-20 What a sl*t!

This court case was intense and very eye catching. It was a good case, and for sure in my point of view that Atticus and Mr. Robinson should win this case. For in fact and proven, that Mr. Robinson is an innocent black man that was unfortunate. Atticus had wonderful and valid evidences and support for his claims that Mr. Robinson was innocent. It is disappointing that Mayella would do such a thing to a married man. She is just 19 years old and she’s “hitting” on this Mr. Robinson. That is totally inappropriate and not a lady like gesture. In addition what I hate about the lie that Mayella told the court is that Mr. Tom Robinson raped her, when in fact, she knew she didn’t. The nerve of people is so big! While I was reading this, I felt like entering the book, and start slapping Mayella and Mr. Bob Ewell to wake them up. If Mayella was a smart young girl, she would have revealed the abuse that she receives from Mr. Bob Ewell. It just makes me mad that there are people in this world that can live like this. Also, Mayella is just crying crocodile tears, and that just makes me want to knock some senses in her head.

Chap. 13-16 Abstinence

http://www.youngandhealthy.ca/caah/Portals/1/img/illustrations/abstinence1.jpg

There was a certain section on the book, when Dill came to the Finches to stay at their place for a while. It is practical that boys sleep on other boy’s room when “sleepovers” occur. Also girls sleep together in one room because they are all girls. In this case, what is the problem right? On the other hand, in this book, who in the right mind, would sleep with a girl without even being married? Dill slept next to Scout because he “felt like it”. He was assigned to sleep with Jem because he is a guy and he disobeys and takes advantage of the privilege he was given; to stay at the Finches. I also can’t believe my eyes that Scout was ok with him sleeping next to her. If I was Scout, I would freak out and tell him to get out and go back to my brother’s room. If Dill can think of taking Scout’s hand in marriage and saying that he “loves” her, there is no doubt that he could have done something irrational at that time. They may seem like angels (like in the photos) but it’s dangerous to have a girl that claims to “love” a boy and a boy that claims to “love a girl in the same room, with no one around.

Chap. 13-16 That’s the Mom’s Job

A happy family is what everyone wants. To be a complete blood related family, there is a father, a mother, and children. For the Finches, they only have Atticus (their father). Scout and Jem don’t have a mother to brag about or anything because she died at their early age. However, this doesn’t give the right for Aunt Alexandra to take over and acts like their mother. Even if she is the sister of their father, she has no right to go to their home and change their lives that quickly. Also, since she is not the mother of the two, she should learn to accept who these kids are, not try to change them because their personality of character doesn’t fit her standards. She is just an auntie, she is not the mother. She claims that she is just helping, but it doesn’t seem that way to me. If feels like while I was reading, that she was taking over the way they live. In addition I don’t see the point of why Aunt Alexandra should be living with them after all these years. They have Calpurnia who is their beloved maid. These two kids were doing just ok without Aunt Alexandra.

Chap. 10-12 United We Stand, Divided We Fall

While I was reading Chapters 10 to 12, it has come to me that this book portrays how people can be racist against each other. During this setting in the book To Kill A Mockingbird, colored men and women were discriminated against by white people. They were looked down upon and disrespected in society. White people would insult them and call them names, and look at colored people as stupid people. If today, our country was still discriminating against colored people, are we going to be able to prosper and advance like how we are now? I title this post “United We Stand, Divided We Fall” because, we make this country. Every single human being alive in the United States of America has purpose to help this world be a better place. We were put in this world for a reason. Our country is prospering because all of us, colored, white, asian, mexican, etc. are working together and trying to make this world a better place.

Maycomb can do the same thing. Every white and colored men, women, and children have a part to making their town a better place.

Chap 10-12 Too Young

From out of all the events that happened between chapters ten two twelve, one sticks out the most. I had no idea that Dill had a major crush or liking on Scout. I just thought that Jem, Dill, and Scout are the best of friends in the whole wide world. However when I was reading chapter 12, I saw that they were more than treating each other as friends. Dill stated that he loved Scout and will love her forever. Also once they grow older, he would marry Scout when he gets enough money. To be thinking about marrying someone when you are the age of an elementary student is too young. In my point of view, I can’t even see how you can claim to “love” someone when you are just a kid. Love is a big word to be used just like that. The word love is the like word hate; it has a strong meaning to it. A fiancé when you are in second grade? I can understand admiring each other and having crushes. Usually, giving cards and the kiss on the cheeks would be the child’s play of “love”. In my opinion the average age to be able to get married, is at least 21 years old, if the couple calls themselves “in love”.

Chap 5-9 Quote

“Do you defend niggers Atticus?” (99)

This quote, offended me even though I’m not African American. It just makes me sad that there are people in this world that discriminate others because of their color. What is wrong with getting along with each other and not worry what race we are? So what if Atticus is defending an African American male, it’s his duty to do so. Even if he was doing it because he knows its right, there is nothing wrong with that. Even today, racism still exists. Because of the Civil War era, blacks were discriminated against by white people and enslaved. It is just a good thing that, today slavery is abolished, but discrimination still exists.

Chap 5-9 RESPECT

What is wrong with people these days, not respecting one another? They tease, hurt, and torment each other. For some reason everyone wants to get on someone’s last nerve. Jem and Dill are starting to annoy me more. What did Boo Radley ever do to them, for him to get the “Boo Radley” game and for him to be disrespected? If they really wanted him to get out and know him, why can’ they do it civilized? Instead of writing a note on a fishing rod for Boo, knock on the door, and ask “Do you want to get ice cream”? Also, Jem and Dill can be charged with trespassing on a private property. I believe, that they should just leave Boo Radley alone, and let him be.
